DTCC Acquires Digital Asset Infrastructure Developer Securrency to Accelerate Blockchain Integration in Global Markets

The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC), a foundational pillar of the American financial market infrastructure, has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Securrency, a prominent developer of digital asset and blockchain infrastructure. Announced on October 19, 2023, the strategic acquisition marks a major step forward for the traditional financial institution as it seeks to embed digital assets and distributed ledger technology (DLT) gradually and securely into its existing suite of products and services. While the specific financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed by the companies, the deal is widely anticipated to close within the coming weeks.

Following the completion of the acquisition, Securrency will be officially rebranded as DTCC Digital Assets. Demonstrating continuity in leadership and operational capability, the startup’s top management team alongside its approximately 100 employees will remain with the organization. Prior to this acquisition, Securrency had established a strong reputation within the financial technology sector, securing backing from major institutional heavyweights such as State Street, U.S. Bank, WisdomTree, and Abu Dhabi Catalyst Partners. The firm also forged strategic partnerships across the industry, including a notable collaboration with digital asset custodian and cybersecurity specialist GK8.

Frank La Salla, President, CEO, and Director of DTCC, emphasized the strategic importance of the acquisition in a public statement released by the corporation. By combining DTCC’s extensive, highly trusted network of financial market participants with the advanced technological sophistication of Securrency, the combined entity aims to position itself at the absolute forefront of unlocking the genuine economic value of digital assets. In addition to absorbing the technology platform into its internal operations, DTCC plans to license Securrency’s technology externally and offer specialized professional services, actively promoting cross-chain interoperability among various distributed ledger solutions. Among current enterprise adopters, financial services firm WisdomTree already utilizes Securrency’s software to power its WisdomTree Prime digital asset platform.

The scale of DTCC’s operations underscores the profound market implications of bringing blockchain infrastructure directly into traditional clearing and settlement systems. DTCC operates as the largest clearing and settlement service provider in the United States, supported by an expansive network of subsidiaries operating worldwide. The sheer volume of transactions handled by the institution illustrates its critical role in maintaining global economic stability. In 2022 alone, DTCC and its subsidiaries successfully processed an astonishing $2.5 quadrillion worth of securities settlements. Furthermore, its core depository subsidiary provided secure custody and comprehensive asset servicing for securities issues originating from more than 150 countries and territories, carrying a combined valuation of $72 trillion.

Integrating blockchain technology into operations of this magnitude is not entirely new territory for DTCC, which has methodically explored the space since 2020. The corporation has previously tested the boundaries of digital finance through collaborative initiatives. Notably, in December of the prior year, DTCC collaborated with the Digital Dollar Project on a securities settlement pilot project. That initiative utilized a simulated digital dollar to carry out live, real-world style transactions involving tokenized securities, successfully exploring various settlement timelines including T2, T1, and T0 frameworks.

The acquisition of Securrency builds directly upon these foundational experiments, transforming experimental pilot projects into permanent architectural capabilities. As traditional financial institutions face mounting industry pressure to modernize legacy systems, reduce settlement times, and eliminate operational friction, the integration of DLT infrastructure by the world’s largest clearinghouse signals a profound generational shift. By embedding Securrency’s technological prowess directly into its global framework, DTCC is actively constructing the digital plumbing required to support the next era of global capital markets, bridging the gap between traditional finance and the emerging digital asset ecosystem.
