Berachain is preparing for a high-stakes network hard fork that will fundamentally overhaul its economic design by replacing its complex dual-token incentive structure with a streamlined model centered entirely on its main BERA token. The sweeping upgrade marks a significant strategic pivot for the layer-1 blockchain, which has historically relied on a multifaceted architecture to distribute rewards and govern network operations.
According to an official announcement shared by the Berachain Foundation via a post on the social media platform X, the hard fork is scheduled to take place on Wednesday at 4:00 pm UTC. The upcoming network upgrade will permanently halt the emission of Bera Governance Tokens, commonly known as BGT, and transition the blockchain’s core incentive mechanism to Wrapped BERA, or WBERA.
Following the implementation of the hard fork, the network will systematically distribute fixed amounts of WBERA as block rewards instead of the previous BGT allocations. This structural shift effectively sunsets Berachain’s previous dual-token model, which previously split network functions and utility between the transferable BERA token and the non-transferable governance token, BGT. By consolidating these functions, the network aims to remove operational friction for everyday participants and liquidity providers alike.
Ahead of the deployment, the Berachain Foundation has indicated that annual percentage rates across the ecosystem could potentially triple following the upgrade, offering a notable boost to prospective yields. However, the foundation also issued cautionary guidance, warning participants that yields may experience heightened volatility and fluctuations during the initial few days as the new emission schedule settles and liquidity rebalances across the network.
Berachain Foundation Strives for a “Simpler” Token Economy
In explaining the rationale behind the upcoming hard fork, the Berachain Foundation emphasized that the upgrade is designed to cultivate a significantly simpler and more sustainable token economy. By replacing the legacy BGT-based reward architecture with a streamlined framework centered on sWBERA—the staked version of Wrapped BERA—the foundation hopes to eliminate the structural friction that previously encumbered user participation.

Before the implementation of this hard fork, users and liquidity providers seeking to maximize their yields had to navigate a labyrinth of multiple reward mechanisms, complex governance loops, and various liquid staking tokens tightly coupled to BGT. This intricate web of interactions often required active management and a deep understanding of the network’s underlying mechanics, which could deter casual participants from engaging deeply with the ecosystem.
The transition to the new economic model is engineered to occur across two distinct stages to ensure a smooth technical rollout. The initial phase began on Tuesday with the activation of WBERA emissions, laying the groundwork for Wednesday’s hard fork, which will enforce the permanent halt of BGT emissions at the protocol level.
In the days immediately following the hard fork, legacy infrastructure including various reward vaults and liquid staking incentives historically tied to BGT will be systematically phased out. This gradual sunsetting is intended to prevent sudden liquidity shocks while guiding remaining capital toward the newly minted sWBERA-centric reward pools.
BERA Falls 7% Ahead of Hard Fork as Network Activity Remains Muted
Despite the ambitious nature of the impending economic overhaul, market reaction ahead of the hard fork has been subdued. The native BERA token experienced a 7% price decline over the 24-hour period leading up to 8:34 am UTC, extending a broader downward trend that has seen the asset lose approximately 88% of its value over the past year, according to data from CoinMarketCap.
Broader metrics reflecting network health and capital deployment also paint a cautious picture of Berachain’s current market standing. The network’s total value locked contracted by $1.79 million, representing a 3% decrease over the same 24-hour tracking window. According to data aggregated by DefiLlama, Berachain currently holds the 37th position among tracked blockchain networks by total value locked, with roughly $56 million in assets securely locked within its smart contracts.
On-chain economic activity leading up to the hard fork remained relatively modest. Over the preceding 24-hour period, Berachain generated a modest $41 in core chain fees alongside $3,359 in underlying application revenue, while simultaneously distributing $14,816 worth of token incentives to encourage network participation and liquidity provisioning. As the network prepares to go live with its simplified WBERA model on Wednesday afternoon, market participants and developers will be closely monitoring whether the promised boost in yield and reduced economic complexity can successfully revitalize activity across the decentralized finance ecosystem.
