Sophon has officially established a November 25 deadline for users to withdraw their digital assets ahead of the impending shutdown of its standalone mainnet. The move comes several months after the project’s developers announced they would abandon their custom Ethereum layer-2 blockchain to shift operational focus toward consumer finance and artificial intelligence applications on Base, Coinbase’s layer-2 network.
In an official statement released on Monday, Sophon confirmed that it will begin systematically dismantling key infrastructure and related websites on November 25. The development team has issued urgent warnings to the community, emphasizing that any tokens or funds left on the Sophon Chain after the deadline risk becoming permanently inaccessible.
The wind-down requires active participation from the network’s user base. Holders of Sophon (SOPH), Ether (ETH), USD Coin (USDC), and various other supported tokens must execute withdrawal transactions promptly. Additionally, users have been instructed to claim any outstanding staking rewards or Guardian node rewards before the infrastructure goes offline entirely.

From Zero-Knowledge Layer-2 to Base Ecosystem
Sophon originally debuted as a zero-knowledge-powered layer-2 network explicitly tailored for consumer-facing applications, encompassing sectors such as gaming, digital entertainment, and artificial intelligence. The project generated significant industry attention during its initial funding phases, successfully raising $60 million through a massive node sale in 2024, which followed a separate $10 million financing round.
Despite the substantial initial capital and high expectations, the economic realities of running an independent blockchain environment proved to be unsustainable. In June, developers publicly reevaluated the project’s architecture, concluding that the ongoing costs of maintaining a standalone blockchain no longer justified the strategic benefits. Consequently, the team formulated a pivot plan to transition their efforts toward building consumer finance and AI-driven applications directly within the Base ecosystem, leveraging its broader liquidity and established user base.
A Broader Trend Among Consumer-Focused Blockchains
The winding down of Sophon’s network is part of a broader, emerging contraction within the specialized layer-2 sector, particularly among networks designed specifically for consumer engagement. Just weeks prior, a remarkably similar development unfolded within the ecosystem of Abstract, a consumer-focused Ethereum layer-2 network developed by Igloo, the parent company behind the popular Pudgy Penguins non-fungible token collection.

On October 6, Abstract announced that it would permanently close its doors on December 15. That decision followed mounting financial strain, with Igloo reportedly suffering tens of millions of dollars in net losses while attempting to subsidize and support the network’s ongoing operations. The concurrent struggles of both Sophon and Abstract highlight the immense financial and operational hurdles faced by standalone application-specific and consumer-centric layer-2 chains in an intensely competitive scaling market.
As the November 25 deadline approaches, Sophon’s community members and stakeholders face a narrow window to secure their funds and transition away from the deprecated chain, marking the definitive end of an ambitious chapter in the project’s multi-chain evolution.
