Bitcoin Dips Below $80,000 Following Hot US Producer Price Index Data and Global Market Sell-Off

Bitcoin (BTC) experienced a notable downward correction on Thursday, slipping below the critical $80,000 threshold after United States Producer Price Index (PPI) data significantly overshot market expectations. The cryptocurrency market, already navigating a cautious macroeconomic environment, faced renewed selling pressure as stubborn inflation figures added fuel to wider financial market headwinds.

Data from TradingView indicated that the BTC/USD trading pair touched its lowest levels since Sept. 18. The premier cryptocurrency declined by as much as 1.8% during the intraday session before mounting a modest recovery to trade back around the $81,000 level. This volatility coincided with a broader wave of risk aversion rippling across global financial markets, compounded by sharp declines in international equities and evolving dynamics within the US fixed-income landscape.

Biggest PPI Increase Since March 2022 Adds to Bitcoin Tailwinds

According to figures released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the September Producer Price Index came in at an unadjusted 6.3% for the 12 months ended in September, marking a full 100 basis points above anticipated levels. Meanwhile, the core PPI—which strips out volatile food and energy components—rose to 5%, outpacing the roughly 4.4% increase expected by economists.

"The September increase is the largest advance since rising 1.7% in March 2022. On an unadjusted basis, the index for final demand climbed 6.3% for the 12 months ended in September, the largest 12-month increase since moving up 6.4% in December 2022," an official BLS news release confirmed.

The hotter-than-expected producer inflation metrics arrived just one day after the Consumer Price Index (CPI) report also came in above estimates, triggering immediate downward momentum across digital assets and other risk-sensitive markets. These domestic inflation surprises compounded pre-existing pressures stemming from an overnight tech sell-off originating in South Korea, where the KOSPI Composite Index suffered a steep 7.5% decline on Thursday.

Prominent economist Mohamed El-Erian weighed in on the inflation prints, describing the PPI report as "even more striking" than the preceding CPI results. However, both El-Erian and other market observers noted an unusual divergence: US bond yields failed to rise in tandem with the higher-than-expected inflation numbers. At the time of writing, the benchmark US 10-year Treasury bond yield was down nearly 3%, touching its lowest levels since Sept. 23.

Robin Brooks, former chief FX strategist at Goldman Sachs, highlighted this phenomenon, pointing to earlier research suggesting that yields had "decoupled" from traditional US macroeconomic data. According to Brooks, market participants have shifted their primary focus away from monthly inflation prints toward the US government’s handling of the expanding federal budget deficit.

Comparing the 30-day correlation between upside data surprises and daily movements in the 10-year yield, Brooks revealed that the correlation metric had plunged from near 0.6 earlier in the year to just below zero by the end of August.

"That indicates that yields have decoupled from data and the obvious explanation for this is that markets are more focused on the trajectory of the deficit, so they’re pushing up longer-term yields regardless of what data surprises are doing," Brooks summarized in a recent commentary.

Analysis Eyes "Early-Stage Bull Market" Support Retest

As macroeconomic crosscurrents weighed on spot prices, Bitcoin’s recent technical action brought several key moving averages and support trend lines back into the spotlight. Market analysts are closely monitoring the 21-week and 50-week exponential moving averages (EMAs), which currently sit at $76,144 and $78,459, respectively.

Trader and popular market analyst Rekt Capital noted that despite the recent dip, BTC/USD still has room to test these foundational trend lines while successfully preserving its overarching bullish macro structure.

"Deviating below them on a volatile retest to find a pullback bottom has historically happened in early-stage Bull Markets. These deviations however would occur after a bullish crossover of these two EMAs, whereas Bitcoin is still pre-crossover," Rekt Capital explained in a social media update.

In the immediate term, Bitcoin has continued to trade below the crucial supply-and-demand zone ranging between $82,500 and $82,800, an area that has commanded significant attention from speculators and derivatives traders throughout recent weeks.

Weighing in on the broader technical outlook, market analyst Aksel Kibar suggested that Bitcoin’s latest weekly close around $83,700 lacked the conviction required to validate a definitive upside breakout.

"A weekly close inside the range can resume wide consolidation between 60K-82.8K 75K can be utilized as the pattern (rectangle bottom reversal) negation level," Kibar noted, pointing to the possibility of extended range-bound trading as the market digests ongoing macroeconomic developments.
