Decentralized exchange Hyperliquid and viral memecoin launchpad Pump.fun have emerged as the dominant forces behind a record-shattering wave of token repurchases in the digital asset sector, collectively accounting for nearly 90% of the unprecedented capital deployed this year.
According to data compiled by Allium Labs and cited in a recent Financial Times report, cryptocurrency projects have spent a staggering $638 million year-to-date to repurchase their native tokens. This figure marks a dramatic acceleration from prior years, rising significantly from the $545 million recorded during the same period in 2025 and dwarfing the minimal $366,000 tracked across the industry in 2024. Of this massive $638 million total, Hyperliquid alone accounted for approximately $370 million, while Pump.fun drove nearly $200 million in repurchases.
The mechanism of token buybacks functions similarly to traditional share buybacks executed by publicly listed companies on traditional stock exchanges. In mainstream corporate finance, firms repurchase their own outstanding stock to support market valuations, signal confidence in the business, and enhance long-term returns for existing shareholders by reducing circulating supply.

While token buybacks have historically remained a relatively rare strategy within the broader decentralized finance and cryptocurrency ecosystem, an increasing number of protocols are beginning to adopt the model to bridge the gap between protocol revenue and tokenholder value. This trend gained further momentum when the Ethena Foundation opened a governance vote on a comprehensive fee-switch proposal. Under the terms of the proposal, 95% of the net revenue generated and paid to the foundation from Ethena’s core business lines would be systematically utilized to repurchase Ethena (ENA) tokens from the open market. The market reaction to the governance initiative was swift, with the ENA token rallying 10.7% on the day the proposal was announced.
HYPE, PUMP Outperform Crypto Market as Buybacks Boost Token Valuations
The aggressive capital allocation toward token repurchases has yielded profound effects on market valuations, helping native assets buck broader macroeconomic and sector-wide downturns. Both the Hyperliquid (HYPE) token and the Pump.fun (PUMP) token have significantly outperformed the wider cryptocurrency market amidst a challenging price environment so far this year.
Market data from TradingView indicates that HYPE surged 145% year-to-date, while PUMP posted a 109% gain over the same timeframe. This stellar outperformance stands in stark contrast to benchmark assets, with Bitcoin’s (BTC) price declining by 10% and the total capitalization of the global cryptocurrency market contracting by 11.9% over the corresponding period.

The mechanics driving these valuations are closely tied to the aggressive revenue-sharing models adopted by the respective platforms. Hyperliquid consistently directs approximately 99% of its operational revenue toward token buybacks. Highlighting this immense cash flow generation, Hyperliquid reported $169 million in second-quarter revenue on Aug. 6, immediately channeling $141 million of that total directly into HYPE buybacks.
Similarly, Pump.fun allocates roughly 50% of its net protocol revenue specifically for token repurchases. The memecoin launchpad currently commands an impressive $420 million in annualized revenue, a figure calculated based on the average daily revenue generated over the preceding 90 days.
Industry analysts suggest that this structural shift toward revenue-backed tokenomics could reshape how investors value digital assets moving forward. Earlier in August, Bitwise Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan noted that overall crypto valuations could potentially double over the next two years. This projected growth, according to Hougan, will be driven by protocols increasingly deploying their revenue streams to fund token buybacks and permanent burns, thereby returning direct, tangible value to investors rather than relying purely on speculative momentum.
