Babylon Labs Submits Proposal to Enable Native Bitcoin Borrowing on Aave V4

Bitcoin-focused development firm Babylon Labs has officially submitted a formal proposal aimed at allowing cryptocurrency users to borrow stablecoins on the decentralized finance lending giant Aave utilizing native Bitcoin as collateral.

The move marks a significant milestone in bridging the gap between the Bitcoin network and the broader decentralized finance ecosystem. Under the technical mechanics outlined in the proposal, users would lock their native Bitcoin directly into dedicated vaults on the Bitcoin network. While the underlying assets remain securely anchored on their native blockchain, users would be able to borrow against them on Aave. To facilitate this cross-chain utility, a specialized non-transferable token minted on the Ethereum blockchain would be issued to represent the collateral position. Crucially, this mechanism ensures that the original Bitcoin remains entirely on its native blockchain without ever needing to be bridged or wrapped through traditional third-party custodial bridges.

The submission of this formal governance proposal on a Wednesday follows a series of foundational steps taken earlier in the year. According to information shared by Babylon Labs, the initiative began with an initial discussion thread and temp check submission on the Aave governance forums on May 25. This was followed by a preliminary community sentiment vote that successfully passed on June 10. The progression from informal discussions to structured governance proposals highlights a growing appetite within both the Bitcoin and decentralized finance communities to unlock liquidity from the world’s largest digital asset without compromising its native security model.

As part of the economic terms outlined in the proposal, the Aave decentralized autonomous organization would stand to benefit directly from the integration. Specifically, the Aave DAO would receive the first $500,000 in qualifying annual revenue generated by the native Bitcoin integration, aligning the incentives of both protocols and providing an immediate economic upside for the lending platform’s ecosystem participants.

The initiative arrives at a time when Aave already supports various methods of borrowing against Bitcoin, primarily through tokenized representations such as Wrapped Bitcoin and Coinbase Wrapped Bitcoin. While these wrapped assets have successfully brought billions of dollars worth of Bitcoin liquidity into decentralized finance markets, they inherently rely on centralized or federated custodians to hold the underlying Bitcoin on a one-to-one basis. This reliance introduces varying degrees of counterparty risk, operational vulnerabilities, and trust assumptions that many purists and risk-conscious institutional investors prefer to avoid. By bypassing the need for wrapped tokens and traditional custodians, the proposed Babylon Labs integration aims to offer a trust-minimized alternative that leverages cryptographic primitives rather than institutional trust.

As of Thursday, the proposal remains actively situated at the Aave Request for Comment stage. During this critical phase, the community is encouraged to review the technical specifications, provide detailed feedback, and engage in comprehensive risk analyses to determine the viability and safety of integrating native Bitcoin vaults into the protocol’s architecture.

If the proposal successfully navigates the community feedback period and achieves the necessary consensus among stakeholders, it will be permitted to proceed to the next phase of Aave’s rigorous governance lifecycle. This next step involves a mandatory three-day offchain Snapshot vote. According to Aave’s established governance rules, this offchain voting phase requires a minimum threshold of at least 320,000 AAVE-equivalent votes cast in favor of the initiative before it can officially advance to a formal onchain vote.

Should it clear the offchain threshold, the proposal will face a final onchain vote, which must strictly satisfy all quorum requirements and approval percentages mandated by the Aave protocol’s decentralized governance framework. The outcome of these upcoming votes will determine whether native Bitcoin holders will soon have a direct, non-custodial pathway to leverage their digital assets for liquidity within one of decentralized finance’s most prominent lending environments.
