SBI Holdings and TradeFinex Partner to Drive Enterprise Blockchain Adoption in Japan Through XDC Network Joint Venture

Financial giant SBI Holdings and UAE-based enterprise blockchain firm TradeFinex are joining forces to drive the adoption of trade finance applications powered by the XDC Network in Japan. The two companies have announced a strategic partnership that will establish a new joint venture aimed at proliferating the Ethereum Virtual Machine-compatible enterprise blockchain across the Japanese market and the broader Asia-Pacific region.

The initiative represents a significant step forward for the integration of decentralized ledger technology into traditional financial systems, particularly within the trade finance sector, which has historically relied on slow, paper-intensive processes. By leveraging the technological capabilities of the XDC Network, the newly formed joint venture seeks to offer Japanese enterprises modern, efficient, and transparent alternatives for managing their international trade requirements.

At the center of this collaboration is TradeFinex, a decentralized platform operating on the XDC Network that connects trade finance originators directly with a diverse ecosystem of banks, financial institutions, and lending providers. Designed specifically with enterprise use cases in mind, the platform provides a suite of blockchain-based financial products tailored to corporate needs. These offerings include digital invoicing, letters of credit, purchase order financing, and supply chain finance solutions, all intended to streamline transactions and reduce friction in global commerce.

The underlying infrastructure for these financial applications is the XDC Network itself, an EVM-compatible layer-1 protocol featuring interoperable smart contracts. According to official documentation, the network is designed as a highly optimized and bespoke fork of Ethereum. It utilizes a delegated proof-of-stake consensus mechanism, which allows the blockchain to achieve rapid transaction finality, remarkably low gas fees, and a high capacity for transactions per second. This architectural design makes it particularly well-suited for enterprise-grade applications that demand scalability and cost-efficiency without sacrificing security or decentralization.

The network operates using its native cryptocurrency, the XDC token, which acts as a vital reserve asset for the various third-party decentralized applications running on the protocol. The token is engineered to serve multiple functions within the ecosystem, including facilitating DApp payment settlements, enabling micropayments, covering transaction costs, and supporting the deployment and execution of smart contracts.

SBI works with UAE’s TradeFinex to set up joint crypto venture in Japan

TradeFinex is no stranger to high-level international collaboration. The firm has previously engaged with prominent global bodies such as the World Trade Organization, the International Chamber of Commerce, and various government agencies to explore how blockchain technology can fundamentally overhaul the speed, transparency, cost-efficiency, and traceability of traditional trade finance.

Recognition of these efforts came notably in a 2020 report published by the World Trade Organization, which highlighted TradeFinex for operating on a hybrid model. The WTO report described the platform as functioning as both permissioned and permissionless—remaining permissionless for public verification while maintaining permissioned controls for selective data sharing. At the time of that publication, the network already saw active participation from a variety of notable industry entities, including Validus, Enigio, Ramco, and the International Trade and Forfaiting Association, among others.

According to details shared in an official announcement, the newly established joint venture in Japan has outlined several core objectives. Among its primary goals are the localization of comprehensive XDC Network information and technical documentation for Japanese users, the expansion of XDC token availability across local cryptocurrency exchanges, and the deployment of advanced trade finance solutions throughout the wider Asia-Pacific region.

The timing of this joint venture coincides with a broader, highly favorable shift in Japan’s regulatory and economic landscape regarding digital assets and Web3 technologies. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and Japanese officials have consistently reaffirmed the country’s commitment to fostering a thriving Web3 ecosystem. This forward-looking stance has been underscored by major global cryptocurrency exchanges, such as Binance, announcing imminent official launches within the Japanese market.

Furthermore, the Japanese government has signaled intentions to permit domestic startups to raise capital through the issuance of cryptocurrency tokens as a modernized alternative to conventional stock listings. Complementing these entrepreneurial initiatives, Japan’s Financial Services Agency announced plans in August 2023 to amend its existing tax code surrounding digital assets. These proposed regulatory adjustments aim to establish a more active and supportive environment for the cryptocurrency sector, which could potentially include exemptions for companies and investors from paying taxes on unrealized cryptocurrency gains.

By aligning with these progressive regulatory movements, the joint venture between SBI Holdings and TradeFinex is well-positioned to capitalize on Japan’s evolving digital economy, offering domestic enterprises robust tools to modernize trade finance while integrating deeply into the global blockchain ecosystem.
