Meanwhile, groundbreaking as the first life insurer licensed to operate entirely in Bitcoin, has successfully raised $37.5 million in a fresh funding round from its existing investors, the company has announced. The capital injection highlights a rapidly expanding market for digital asset financial products as affluent individuals across the globe look for secure, regulated ways to manage and pass on their cryptocurrency holdings.
Bain Capital Crypto spearheaded the financing round, with robust participation from a roster of prominent venture capital firms and institutional players, including Haun Ventures, Framework Ventures, Pantera Capital, Apollo, Northwestern Mutual Future Ventures, and Morgan Creek Digital. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, a notable early backer of the enterprise, also participated in the funding. With this latest influx of capital, Meanwhile’s total funding raised since its inception has climbed to more than $180 million, cementing its position as a uniquely capitalized player at the intersection of traditional insurance and decentralized finance.
According to the company, the new round was catalyzed by a sharp surge in demand for its Bitcoin-denominated life insurance policies outside the United States. High-net-worth individuals in regions such as Asia, Europe, and the Middle East have increasingly turned to alternative financial safe havens amid broader macroeconomic instability, currency fluctuations, and shifting geopolitical landscapes.
Zac Townsend, co-founder and chief executive officer of Meanwhile, emphasized the structural gap in the market that the company was created to solve. In a statement released alongside the funding announcement, Townsend noted that wealthy families around the world already hold significant positions in Bitcoin, yet they have historically lacked a fully regulated, compliant mechanism to pass those digital assets on to the next generation. Brokers approached the company because their clients kept asking for viable estate-planning solutions, Townsend explained, adding that this new funding round will directly enable the firm to keep pace with that escalating institutional and client demand.
The financing arrives on the heels of several major operational milestones for the insurer. In early 2026, Meanwhile rolled out BTC Life 1-Pay, a single-premium whole life insurance policy specifically tailored for high-net-worth clients based outside of the United States. This offering represents the company’s second major product line, following the previous release of BTC 10-Pay, which was architected specifically to cater to United States taxpayers seeking compliant crypto insurance coverage.
Under the structure of the BTC Life 1-Pay product, a client pays a single premium entirely in Bitcoin and, in return, receives a guaranteed death benefit denominated in Bitcoin for life. The underlying value of the policy compounds and grows in Bitcoin. Furthermore, policyholders are granted the flexibility—beginning after the first year—to borrow up to 90 percent of the policy’s cash value, operating without a rigid repayment schedule and free from the threat of margin calls, a feature traditionally coveted by sophisticated wealth managers.
These policies can be held directly by individuals, or structured through complex legal entities such as family trusts and corporate vehicles. This versatility makes the insurance products exceptionally well-suited for comprehensive succession planning, estate management, and multi-generational wealth preservation strategies.
In the wake of its product rollouts, Meanwhile has rapidly expanded its distribution network. The company has successfully signed partnerships with 15 elite brokerages that serve wealthy families across key international financial hubs, including Singapore, Hong Kong, the United Arab Emirates, and Switzerland. Among its prominent partners are Lioner, a multi-faceted insurance, trust, and family office group with established operations across Hong Kong, Singapore, and Zurich, alongside Apeiron Group, a specialized marketplace for high-net-worth life insurance.
Justin Man, the chief executive officer of Apeiron Group, pointed to a profound psychological and structural shift taking place among global wealth holders. Man observed that the market is reaching a crucial turning point where wealthy clients are moving past the initial phase of merely figuring out how to hold Bitcoin and digital assets. Instead, they are actively asking how to plan around those assets and how to systematically transfer that accumulated wealth to their heirs.
The commercial momentum is visibly translating into financial performance. Meanwhile reported that its net long-term underwriting income has already surpassed its total figures from the previous year and remains firmly on an upward trajectory to more than double throughout 2026, though the company opted to withhold specific financial disclosures.
Stefan Cohen, a partner at Bain Capital Crypto, praised the company’s unique structural architecture and execution. Cohen remarked that Meanwhile effectively owns every single layer of a regulated life insurer while building and scaling operations with the agility of an artificial intelligence-enabled startup. He added that the remarkable growth demonstrated throughout the year serves as ultimate validation of the business model, making the firm proud to participate in this follow-on financing.
The operational foundation of the business rests within its primary operating entity, Meanwhile Insurance Bitcoin (Bermuda) Limited. The firm holds a historic Class IILT license, which was officially granted by the Bermuda Monetary Authority in July 2024 following a rigorous two-year incubation period within the regulator’s specialized financial technology sandbox.
Underpinning its regulatory compliance, Meanwhile maintains its entire balance sheet, corporate reserves, and officially audited financial statements denominated strictly in Bitcoin. To ensure maximum safety and institutional-grade security, all policyholder Bitcoin assets are held securely with fully regulated, third-party institutional custodians, bridging the gap between cutting-edge digital currency and the stringent fiduciary standards expected of the global insurance industry.
