Hyperliquid RWA Trading Volume Surpasses Crypto Assets for the First Time in Historic Milestone

Perpetual decentralized exchange (DEX) Hyperliquid has reached a major milestone as its weekly trading volume in tokenized real-world assets (RWAs) exceeded that of all other asset categories combined for the first time in the platform’s history. This shift highlights a broader evolution in decentralized finance, where traditional financial instruments are increasingly finding a home on blockchain networks alongside native digital assets.

According to data compiled by Blockworks, real-world assets generated $25.1 billion in trading volume on Hyperliquid between July 13 and July 19. This massive influx of capital accounted for 52% of the protocol’s total weekly volume, which stood at $48.2 billion. The numbers underline a rapid acceleration in user adoption and institutional interest in tokenized instruments within the decentralized perpetual swap ecosystem.

The scale of this activity has drawn widespread attention from industry analysts and market observers. Highlighting the dominance of the sector, ARK Invest’s research director for digital assets, Lorenzo Valente, noted in a Thursday post on social media platform X that Hyperliquid’s RWA market alone was larger than the combined crypto perpetual volume of every other decentralized exchange operating in the market.

This surge in trading volume mirrors broader growth metrics across the entire real-world asset sector. Data aggregator RWA.xyz shows that over the preceding month, the number of RWA holders expanded by 32% to reach 1.25 million users. Simultaneously, the total value of tokenized real-world assets rose by 3.5%, bringing the cumulative market capitalization of these assets to $36.7 billion.

The booming activity on Hyperliquid has translated into substantial protocol earnings. DefiLlama data indicates that the decentralized exchange generated $7.6 million in revenue over the course of the week. This performance placed the perp DEX firmly in the third position among all crypto applications by weekly revenue. It trailed only stablecoin industry giants Tether and Circle, which reported weekly revenues of $112 million and $45 million, respectively, showcasing the immense economic activity flowing through Hyperliquid’s infrastructure.

RWAs become Hyperliquid’s largest trading category

This growth has also captured the attention of mainstream financial institutions and traditional market operators. The intersection of traditional finance and decentralized architecture has become a primary focal point for market participants seeking more efficient clearing, settlement, and trading mechanisms. For instance, the New York Stock Exchange partnered with tokenization platform Securitize earlier in March to develop blockchain-based stock trading infrastructure designed to support 24/7 trading and settlement capabilities.

Major "Structural Shift" for Crypto Markets: Circle Co-Founder

The growing adoption of tokenized assets on platforms like Hyperliquid has been interpreted by industry leaders as a fundamental change in market dynamics. Circle co-founder and CEO Jeremy Allaire addressed the milestone in a Friday post on X, stating that the surging RWA trading volume marks a major structural shift for crypto markets. He emphasized that the industry is moving away from purely speculating on endogenous digital commodities and toward integrating real-world economic value onchain.

This sentiment aligns with broader assessments from institutional investment firms regarding the future architecture of global finance. Earlier in July, Pantera Capital published an analysis suggesting that perpetual futures could eventually become a dominant trading instrument that extends far beyond the boundaries of cryptocurrency markets. According to the firm, perps offer significant structural advantages over traditional derivatives, including round-the-clock trading, the absence of contract expiration dates, simplified position management, and continuous price discovery.

The rapid expansion of Hyperliquid has not gone unnoticed by traditional Wall Street giants. Jeffrey Sprecher, CEO of NYSE parent company Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), recently urged regulators to establish a level playing field that would allow traditional institutions to participate in the launch of 24/7 onchain perpetual futures contracts. As blockchain infrastructure matures, the traditional financial sector is increasingly looking toward decentralized perpetual platforms as a template for the future of global trading.
