HSBC Launches RedCoin Stablecoin in Hong Kong, Bringing RCHKD to Millions of PayMe Users

Banking giant HSBC has officially entered the digital asset landscape with the launch of its first Hong Kong-dollar stablecoin, RedCoin (RCHKD), designed to facilitate seamless peer-to-peer transfers and everyday merchant payments through its widely popular PayMe application.

The move marks a significant milestone for traditional financial institutions operating within Asia’s premier financial hub. According to announcements made by the bank, more than 3.3 million active PayMe users will gain the ability to effortlessly activate dedicated stablecoin wallets directly within the application over the coming days. This integration bridges the gap between conventional mobile payment infrastructure and blockchain-based digital currencies, offering millions of retail consumers a regulated, reliable way to transact using stablecoin technology.

RedCoin has been meticulously engineered to maintain a strict one-to-one peg with the Hong Kong dollar, ensuring that users can redeem their digital tokens for fiat currency securely and predictably. To underpin the security and trust required for a mainstream financial product of this scale, HSBC Digital Assets Custody has been appointed to provide institutional-grade safekeeping services for the underlying reserves and assets backing the stablecoin.

This consumer-focused rollout follows closely on the heels of other foundational steps within Hong Kong’s evolving digital asset ecosystem. Earlier in August, Anchorpoint rolled out its own HKDAP stablecoin through HashKey Exchange, targeting eligible institutions and professional investors during its initial rollout phase. The competitive landscape for digital currencies in the territory has accelerated rapidly following regulatory milestones achieved earlier in the year.

Back in April, HSBC secured its official stablecoin issuer license alongside Anchorpoint Financial—a prominent joint venture backed by major industry players including Standard Chartered, Animoca Brands, and HKT. Together, HSBC and Anchorpoint became the very first commercial entities to be approved under Hong Kong’s comprehensive and rigorous stablecoin regulatory framework, setting a precedent for how traditional banking institutions can safely integrate decentralized technology into centralized financial systems.

Looking beyond everyday retail transactions and peer-to-peer mobile payments, HSBC has outlined an ambitious roadmap for the expansion of RedCoin across multiple sectors of the financial economy. The bank intends to introduce RedCoin wallets to its broader flagship ecosystem, including the HSBC HK Mobile Banking App, later this year.

This upcoming expansion into mainstream mobile banking is designed to unlock advanced financial functionalities for retail and wealth management customers. Specifically, HSBC plans to enable users to seamlessly subscribe to tokenized investment products directly through the application. Among the first wave of tokenized offerings will be a specialized new share class of the bank’s existing Hong Kong dollar money market fund, representing a practical use case for tokenization in traditional asset management.

Furthermore, HSBC’s strategic vision for RedCoin is not limited to consumer banking and retail investment products. The financial institution has confirmed concrete plans to expand the utility of RedCoin into wholesale corporate and institutional applications. By integrating stablecoin infrastructure into wholesale banking, HSBC aims to streamline cross-border settlements, enhance liquidity management, and optimize corporate treasury operations for institutional clients operating in Hong Kong and across international markets.
