Ethereum Name Service Seeks DAO Approval to Launch ENSv2 Protocol Upgrade on Mainnet

The decentralized ecosystem surrounding the Ethereum Name Service (ENS) is preparing for a major structural evolution as developers and community leaders push to modernize the underlying infrastructure of the widely used human-readable naming protocol. ENS has officially submitted a formal proposal to its decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) seeking approval to activate an upgraded naming protocol directly on the Ethereum mainnet, marking a significant milestone in the project’s long-term roadmap.

Nick Johnson, the founder and lead developer of ENS, formally submitted an executable draft proposal to initiate ENSv2, representing the next major generation of the protocol. If the decentralized community votes to approve the measure, the upgrade will institute a temporary freeze on new domain registrations within the original legacy ENS registrar. However, existing domain holders will retain full functionality and will be permitted to continue renewing their human-readable names without disruption under the current framework.

The proposed ENSv2 upgrade introduces a completely redesigned registry architecture specifically engineered to deliver more flexible domain management capabilities and advanced permission structures. This structural overhaul is designed to optimize how decentralized identifiers operate on the Ethereum network, reducing friction for users and developers alike. Furthermore, as part of the transition toward complete decentralization, ENS Labs has outlined intentions to transfer its remaining administrative control over the newly upgraded smart contracts directly to the DAO once the activation process is successfully completed.

Under the mechanics of the transition plan, brand-new dot-eth registrations will migrate over to the newly upgraded system, but this shift will only occur after all existing domain records have been fully synchronized between the old and the new architectures. Johnson issued a technical advisory warning to the community, noting that the registration of new domains will be temporarily unavailable on either version of the protocol for a period of several hours while the technical transition and data synchronization take place.

For current participants in the ecosystem, the upgrade path has been designed with continuity and user convenience in mind. Existing domain holders are under no immediate obligation to migrate their assets, and their established names will continue to function normally according to the proposal specifications. To ensure a smooth and stress-free user experience, ENS Labs has taken the proactive step of reserving existing dot-eth names for their current rightful owners on the upgraded system, granting users the freedom to migrate their domains whenever they feel ready to do so.

At present, the activation proposal remains in its preliminary draft stage and must successfully navigate the formal governance process, eventually advancing to an onchain DAO vote before any code can be executed on the mainnet.

Navigating the stringent governance rules established by the ENS DAO, executable proposals are bound by specific participation and approval thresholds. The protocol requires a minimum voter participation rate of at least 1 percent, which translates to a threshold of 1 million ENS votes cast, alongside a majority approval margin during the standard seven-day voting window. Should the community vote in favor of the upgrade, the implementation process will still be subject to a mandatory minimum two-day timelock period before the code is officially executed on the network. As of the current reporting, an exact voting date has not yet been publicly announced by the governance coordinators.
