Ethereum Name Service Moves Toward Major Overhaul as Founder Submits ENSv2 Activation Proposal

The Ethereum Name Service (ENS) is officially seeking approval from its decentralized autonomous organization to transition the leading blockchain-based naming protocol to a significantly upgraded iteration on the Ethereum mainnet.

Nick Johnson, the founder of the Ethereum Name Service, has submitted a formal and executable draft proposal aimed at activating ENSv2, which represents the next major evolutionary phase for the protocol. If the decentralized community votes to approve the initiative, the comprehensive upgrade will fundamentally reshape how domain management, registry architecture, and administrative permissions operate within the ecosystem, introducing a more flexible framework while preserving the foundational assets of current users.

According to the details outlined in the executable draft proposal, the activation of ENSv2 will trigger an immediate freeze on new domain registrations within the original ENS registrar. However, the proposal ensures that existing domain holders will retain full functionality and will be allowed to continue renewing their current names without interruption. The upgrade introduces a newly redesigned registry architecture that incorporates more flexible domain management capabilities and advanced permission structures, designed to better accommodate the evolving needs of the decentralized web.

Furthermore, the strategic roadmap for ENSv2 includes a significant shift in protocol governance. Following the successful activation of the upgraded contracts, ENS Labs has announced plans to transfer its remaining administrative control over the contracts directly to the decentralized autonomous organization, further decentralizing the management and oversight of the infrastructure.

The transition process has been carefully planned to safeguard user experience, though it will require a brief operational window during which certain functions will be paused. Once domain records have been successfully synchronized, all new .eth registrations will officially migrate to the newly upgraded system. Johnson cautioned the community in the proposal text that new registrations would be temporarily unavailable on either version of the protocol for several hours while the technical transition and synchronization take place.

To alleviate potential concerns regarding asset safety and forced migrations, the proposal explicitly notes that existing domain holders are not required to migrate immediately. Their current names will continue to function normally on the legacy infrastructure. Additionally, ENS Labs has proactively reserved existing .eth names for their respective current owners on the upgraded system, granting users the flexibility to execute their migration to ENSv2 at whatever time suits them best.

At present, the activation proposal remains in the draft stage and must successfully navigate the established governance pipeline before it can be implemented on the network. Specifically, the initiative must advance from the discussion forum to an official onchain decentralized autonomous organization vote.

Under the established governance rules of the Ethereum Name Service, executable proposals are subject to stringent participation and approval thresholds. They require a minimum of 1 percent voter participation—which translates to at least 1 million ENS votes—alongside a majority approval during a strict seven-day voting window. Should the community vote in favor of the upgrade, the implementation will additionally be subject to a mandatory minimum two-day timelock before the code is officially executed on the mainnet. As of the time of submission, a specific voting date for the ENSv2 activation has not yet been formally announced by the core team or community organizers.
