The Ethereum Name Service (ENS) is taking a major step forward in its protocol evolution, seeking formal approval from its decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) to activate an upgraded naming architecture on the Ethereum mainnet.
Nick Johnson, the founder of the Ethereum Name Service, formally submitted an executable draft proposal designed to bring ENSv2, the highly anticipated next version of the protocol, into active deployment. If the decentralized community grants its approval, the sweeping upgrade will effectively freeze new domain registrations on the original ENS registrar contract, while simultaneously allowing existing domain holders to continue renewing and managing their current names without disruption.
The introduction of ENSv2 marks a structural milestone for the popular decentralized domain project. The upgrade introduces a redesigned registry architecture built specifically to deliver more flexible domain management capabilities and advanced permission structures for users and developers alike. Furthermore, as part of the transition to a fully decentralized governance and operational model, ENS Labs has outlined plans to transfer its remaining administrative control over the newly upgraded contracts directly to the DAO once the activation process is successfully completed.
Under the mechanics of the proposed transition, new registrations for .eth domains will automatically shift over to the newly upgraded system, but this will only occur once all underlying domain records have been thoroughly synchronized between the legacy and modern architectures. Johnson issued a technical advisory warning to the community ahead of the proposal, noting that new domain registrations will be temporarily unavailable on either version of the protocol for several hours during the migration and synchronization window.
For the vast majority of current users, the transition is designed to be entirely non-disruptive. Existing domain holders are not required to undergo any mandatory migration process, and their established names will continue functioning normally across the Ethereum ecosystem, according to the official proposal details. To ensure a smooth user experience, ENS Labs has proactively reserved existing .eth names for their current owners directly on the upgraded system, ensuring that individuals can choose to migrate their assets at their own convenience when they feel ready.
At this stage, the activation proposal remains firmly in the draft stage of development and must successfully advance through the community pipeline to reach an onchain DAO vote before any implementation can take place.
Governance rules established within the ENS DAO dictate that executable proposals must meet specific participation and consensus thresholds. Specifically, proposals require a minimum of one percent voter participation, which translates to at least one million ENS votes cast, alongside a majority approval during a strict seven-day voting period. Should the community vote to approve the upgrade, the implementation will be subject to a mandatory minimum two-day timelock period before the execution code can run on the mainnet. At the time of the proposal submission, an exact official voting date has not yet been announced by the governance coordinators.
