The Ethereum Name Service (ENS), one of the most prominent decentralized domain and identity protocols in the Web3 ecosystem, is actively seeking approval from its decentralized autonomous organization to activate a major upgraded naming protocol on the Ethereum mainnet.
Nick Johnson, the founder and lead developer of the Ethereum Name Service, has officially submitted an executable draft proposal to the ENS community designed to kick off the activation of ENSv2, which represents the next evolutionary phase of the protocol. If the community votes to approve the proposal, the upgrade will institute a formal freeze on all new domain registrations taking place on the original ENS registrar contract. However, the proposal ensures that existing domain holders will maintain their full rights, allowing them to continue seamlessly renewing their human-readable blockchain addresses without interruption.
The sweeping architectural upgrade is designed to introduce a heavily redesigned registry system. This new architecture features significantly more flexible domain management capabilities alongside advanced permission structures that aim to give users and developers greater control over their digital identities. Once the activation process is successfully completed and the dust settles, ENS Labs has outlined plans to permanently transfer its remaining administrative control and oversight capabilities over the newly upgraded smart contracts directly to the DAO, further cementing the protocol’s commitment to complete decentralization.
According to the details outlined in the proposal, brand new .eth domain registrations will officially transition over to the newly upgraded system once all existing domain records have been thoroughly synchronized across the network. During the transition phase, Johnson issued a technical warning to the community, noting that new registrations will be temporarily unavailable on either version of the protocol for a period lasting several hours while the backend systems synchronize and the deployment finalizes.
Despite the scope of the transition, everyday users and existing domain holders are not required to participate in any mandatory migration processes. Their current names will continue functioning completely normally across the decentralized web, exactly as they always have. Furthermore, ENS Labs has taken precautions to reserve all existing .eth names for their rightful current owners on the upgraded system. This thoughtful design choice ensures that users are under no immediate pressure and can choose to migrate their domain assets to the new architecture at their own convenience whenever they feel ready.
At this current juncture, the activation proposal remains strictly in its draft stage. Before it can be officially implemented on the blockchain, the proposal must successfully advance through the community discussion forums and graduate to an official onchain DAO vote.
Under the established governance rules governing the Ethereum Name Service ecosystem, executable proposals must clear several strict hurdles to pass. Specifically, they require a minimum of 1% voter participation from the token-holder base, which translates to a threshold of at least 1 million ENS votes cast. Additionally, the proposal must secure a majority approval from participating voters during a mandatory seven-day voting period. Should the community vote to approve the measure, the upgrade will not take effect immediately; instead, it will be subject to a strict minimum two-day timelock period before final execution on the mainnet. As of the time of submission, an official voting date has not yet been formally announced by the core team or community coordinators.
