Bitmine Immersion Technologies has officially drawn a line in the sand regarding its massive cryptocurrency treasury, announcing that it will strictly cap its holdings at 5% of the total circulating supply of Ether. The landmark decision was revealed by Chairman Tom Lee during a high-profile keynote address at the Token2049 conference in Singapore on Wednesday, marking a definitive shift in the company’s aggressive accumulation strategy.
Speaking to a packed audience of industry leaders, developers, and investors, Lee shared that Bitmine is currently on the precipice of reaching its ultimate goal. Having methodically accumulated roughly 6 million Ether—which currently accounts for approximately 4.9% of the cryptocurrency’s total supply—the firm requires a mere 100,000 additional ETH to cross the finish line and cement its target threshold.
"That’s a hard cap. We’re not gonna be accumulating past 5%," Lee told the audience during his keynote address, leaving no room for ambiguity regarding the corporate treasury’s future purchasing limits. "We’re not gonna own more than 5% of Ethereum."
This definitive stance provides absolute clarity on the company’s long-term balance sheet plans, resolving lingering speculation over whether Bitmine might seek to expand its footprint further as the blockchain ecosystem matures. Lee had previously left the door open to a higher accumulation ceiling depending on the broader adoption curves of the Ethereum network. In an interview with Bankless back in August, the Chairman noted that the firm could theoretically revisit its accumulation strategy by 2027 if market conditions and network utility warranted it. However, Wednesday’s announcement confirms that the board has opted for a strict, unyielding ceiling instead.
Bitmine Says It Is "Done Stacking" Ether
Reflecting on the strategic timing of the treasury’s growth, Lee highlighted that the vast majority of Bitmine’s staggering Ether position was acquired during a prolonged crypto bear market. By stepping up its buying activity while market sentiment was muted and prices were heavily depressed, the company managed to construct a multi-billion-dollar digital asset portfolio at a fraction of its potential peak value.

"We did all this buying in a bear market," Lee explained, reflecting on the capital allocation strategy. "We protected the downside for ETH because we were buying. But now, we’re done stacking in front of a 25X move."
Beyond macro market conditions, Lee explicitly tied the establishment of the 5% hard cap to Bitmine’s broader corporate finance and capital markets strategy. By bringing its aggressive purchasing phase to a close, the company effectively eliminates the necessity to continuously tap public markets or secure external funding specifically dedicated to acquiring more native tokens. This transition, according to leadership, removes a major overhang for shareholders who might otherwise have worried about dilution or continuous capital calls.
"So if we have a 5% hard cap, that means we’re gonna outperform ETH on the way up, right?" Lee asked rhetorically, emphasizing the value proposition for investors. "’Cause you don’t have to worry about us trying to raise capital. We’re done."
The strategy of building a colossal crypto treasury has required sophisticated maneuvering through traditional capital markets. In June, Bitmine made waves across the financial sector by launching a $300 million perpetual preferred stock offering, following in the footsteps of pioneering corporate treasury models. The capital raised through these specialized financial instruments fueled the continuous accumulation of Ether throughout the downturn. Furthermore, as part of its ongoing capital management initiatives, Bitmine aggressively repurchased 16.1 million common shares under its expansive $4 billion buyback program by early August, demonstrating a dual commitment to expanding its digital asset backing while delivering value directly to equity holders.
Even though Bitmine’s open-market purchasing days are drawing to a close, the company’s exposure to the Ethereum ecosystem will continue to evolve through network participation. With a massive multi-billion-dollar crypto treasury at its disposal, the firm is heavily positioned to generate substantial passive yields. Bitmine has previously projected pulling in roughly $334 million in annual staking revenue from its staggering $15.8 billion crypto treasury, backed by millions of staked tokens.
However, managing that incoming stream of rewards while respecting the newly instituted 5% cap will require careful asset management. Lee previously noted that the company could potentially sell off portions of the ETH earned through native staking rewards to prevent its overall share of the circulating supply from creeping past the strict 5% ceiling.
