Meanwhile, the world’s first life insurer licensed to operate entirely in Bitcoin, has successfully raised $37.5 million in a fresh funding round from its existing investors, marking a significant milestone for the firm as it scales to meet surging international demand.
The financing round was led by Bain Capital Crypto, with robust participation from a roster of prominent venture capital and institutional players, including Haun Ventures, Framework Ventures, Pantera Capital, Apollo, Northwestern Mutual Future Ventures, and Morgan Creek Digital. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, a notable early backer of the enterprise, also participated in the round. With this latest injection of capital, Meanwhile has now brought its total funding to more than $180 million since its inception.
The capital raise follows a dramatic uptick in demand for the company’s specialized Bitcoin life insurance policies outside the United States, particularly among high-net-worth families and individuals across Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. Company executives attribute this regional growth to ongoing macroeconomic instability and a rising desire among affluent asset holders to find secure, compliant ways to manage and pass down digital fortunes.
"Wealthy families around the world already hold Bitcoin," said Zac Townsend, Meanwhile’s co-founder and chief executive officer, in a statement addressing the announcement. "What they haven’t had is a regulated way to pass it on. Brokers came to us because their clients kept asking. This round lets us keep up with them."
The latest funding arrives on the heels of several product expansions and regulatory achievements for the company. In early 2026, Meanwhile rolled out BTC Life 1-Pay, a single-premium whole life policy specifically tailored for high-net-worth clients outside the United States. This offering marked the firm’s second major product line, following the introduction of its flagship BTC 10-Pay policy, which was originally designed to cater to U.S. taxpayers seeking compliant digital asset planning tools.
Under the mechanics of the BTC Life 1-Pay policy, a client pays a single, upfront premium entirely in Bitcoin and, in return, receives a guaranteed death benefit denominated in Bitcoin for life. The underlying value of the policy grows organically alongside the digital asset, and after the first year of holding, the policyowner is granted the ability to borrow up to 90 percent of the cash value. Crucially, this liquidity option features no rigid repayment schedule and carries no risk of margin calls, offering policyholders unprecedented flexibility.
Furthermore, these policies can be held directly by individuals, or structured through trusts and corporate entities. Company leadership points to this structural versatility as a primary reason why the products have become increasingly popular for complex succession and estate planning among wealthy families who hold significant portions of their net worth in digital currencies.
Since the introduction of its international offerings, Meanwhile has rapidly expanded its distribution network, successfully signing agreements with 15 elite brokers who serve wealthy families across key international financial hubs, including Singapore, Hong Kong, the United Arab Emirates, and Switzerland. Among its strategic partners are prominent regional entities such as Lioner, an established insurance, trust, and family office group operating out of Hong Kong, Singapore, and Zurich, as well as Apeiron Group, a leading marketplace specializing in high-net-worth life insurance solutions.
Industry leaders note that these partnerships reflect a broader structural evolution in how wealth management professionals view digital assets. Rather than treating Bitcoin as a purely speculative asset class meant for short-term trading, affluent clients and their advisors are increasingly grappling with the generational realities of wealth accumulation.
"We’re reaching a turning point where more high-net-worth clients are asking not just how to hold Bitcoin and digital assets, but how to plan around them and ultimately transfer that wealth to the next generation," observed Justin Man, CEO of Apeiron Group.
The commercial momentum is visibly translating into the company’s financial performance. Meanwhile reported that its net long-term underwriting income has already surpassed the total figures recorded for the entirety of last year, and the business is currently on an aggressive trajectory to more than double its underwriting income over the course of 2026, though specific financial figures were kept private.
Investors have pointed to the company’s unique operational architecture as a driving force behind its rapid scale. By combining the rigorous regulatory compliance of a traditional, licensed life insurer with the agility and technological infrastructure of an artificial intelligence-enabled startup, Meanwhile has carved out an entirely new category within the global insurance landscape.
"Meanwhile owns every layer of a regulated life insurer and builds it like an AI-enabled startup," said Stefan Cohen, a partner at Bain Capital Crypto. "The growth this year proves the model, and we’re glad to back them again."
The foundational operating entity behind the enterprise, Meanwhile Insurance Bitcoin (Bermuda) Limited, holds a historic Class IILT license granted by the Bermuda Monetary Authority. The company officially secured the regulatory designation in July 2024 following a rigorous two-year development period spent operating within the regulator’s specialized sandbox environment, making it the first life insurer of its kind to achieve full regulatory licensure.
Operating under this unique regulatory framework, the insurer’s entire balance sheet, reserve funds, and audited financial statements are denominated strictly in Bitcoin. To ensure the highest standards of safety and regulatory compliance, all policyholder Bitcoin assets are securely held with fully regulated institutional custodians, providing institutional-grade security for the firm’s growing global clientele.
