Sam Altman-Backed Meanwhile Secures $37.5 Million as Global Demand for Bitcoin Life Insurance Surges

Meanwhile, recognized as the world’s first life insurer licensed to operate entirely in Bitcoin, has successfully raised $37.5 million in a fresh funding round from its existing group of investors, the company announced. The latest capital injection highlights the accelerating convergence of traditional estate planning and digital asset management, driven by a growing wave of high-net-worth individuals seeking regulated financial instruments for their cryptocurrency holdings.

Bain Capital Crypto spearheaded the financing round, with robust participation from a roster of prominent venture capital firms and institutional backers, including Haun Ventures, Framework Ventures, Pantera Capital, Apollo, Northwestern Mutual Future Ventures, and Morgan Creek Digital. With this latest infusion of capital, Meanwhile’s total funding amassed since its inception has climbed to more than $180 million. High-profile entrepreneur and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman also remains among the company’s key backers, reflecting continued confidence from leading figures in the technology sector regarding the viability of Bitcoin-native financial services.

The company stated that this newly secured funding round comes on the heels of a significant surge in demand for its specialized Bitcoin life insurance policies outside of the United States. High-net-worth clients across international markets—most notably in Asia, Europe, and the Middle East—have increasingly turned to digital assets and alternative wealth preservation vehicles amid ongoing macroeconomic instability and traditional currency fluctuations.

Zac Townsend, co-founder and CEO of Meanwhile, emphasized the unique market gap the company was created to address. Wealthy families around the world already hold substantial amounts of Bitcoin, Townsend noted in a public statement, yet what they have lacked until now is a fully regulated, secure, and legally sound mechanism to pass those assets on to future generations. Brokers came to the company because their clients kept asking for compliant solutions, Townsend explained, adding that this new funding round will provide the necessary resources to keep pace with that escalating market demand.

The momentum follows the early 2026 launch of BTC Life 1-Pay, a single-premium whole life insurance policy specifically tailored for high-net-worth clients based outside the United States. This product represents Meanwhile’s second major product line, following the previous rollout of BTC 10-Pay, which was designed primarily to cater to US taxpayers navigating complex domestic regulatory environments.

Under the terms of the BTC Life 1-Pay policy, a client pays a single, upfront premium entirely in Bitcoin and, in return, receives a guaranteed death benefit denominated in Bitcoin that lasts for the entirety of their life. The underlying value of the policy grows organically in Bitcoin over time. Furthermore, after the completion of the first policy year, the policy owner is granted the flexibility to borrow up to 90% of the policy’s accumulated value, operating without a rigid repayment schedule and without the threat of margin calls, offering policyholders unprecedented liquidity options for their digital wealth.

These policies can be held directly by individuals, or structured through trusts and corporate entities. According to the company, this structural flexibility makes them exceptionally well-suited for comprehensive succession planning, estate management, and generational wealth transfer strategies for affluent families navigating cross-border jurisdictions.

Since the introduction of its international product offerings, Meanwhile has rapidly expanded its distribution footprint, successfully signing partnerships with 15 elite brokerages that serve wealthy families across key global financial hubs, including Singapore, Hong Kong, the United Arab Emirates, and Switzerland. Among its prominent partners are Lioner, a well-established insurance, trust, and family office group operating across Hong Kong, Singapore, and Zurich, alongside Apeiron Group, a specialized marketplace for high-net-worth life insurance products.

Justin Man, CEO of Apeiron Group, pointed to a broader structural shift within the wealth management industry. The market is currently reaching a critical turning point, Man observed, where an increasing number of high-net-worth clients are no longer just asking how to securely hold Bitcoin and other digital assets, but are actively seeking guidance on how to plan around them and ultimately transfer that accumulated wealth seamlessly to the next generation.

Alongside its expansion in client acquisition and broker partnerships, Meanwhile reported that its net long-term underwriting income has already surpassed the total figures recorded for the previous year and remains firmly on an upward trajectory to more than double throughout 2026, though the company opted not to disclose specific financial figures publicly.

Stefan Cohen, a partner at Bain Capital Crypto, praised the company’s unique operational framework and rapid commercial progress. Meanwhile successfully owns every single layer of a regulated life insurer while building and scaling it with the agility of an AI-enabled startup, Cohen said. The impressive growth trajectory witnessed throughout the year clearly validates the underlying business model, he added, noting that his firm was proud to provide renewed backing in this latest financing round.

The institutional credibility of the insurer is anchored by its primary operating entity, Meanwhile Insurance Bitcoin (Bermuda) Limited, which holds a groundbreaking Class IILT license granted by the Bermuda Monetary Authority. The company officially secured this regulatory milestone in July 2024 following a rigorous two-year development and testing period within the regulator’s specialized sandbox environment.

Operating with a fully transparent financial foundation, the insurer maintains its entire balance sheet, operational reserves, and audited financial statements denominated strictly in Bitcoin. To ensure the highest standards of security and institutional trust, all policyholder Bitcoin assets are held securely with fully regulated, independent institutional custodians.
