The Ethereum Name Service (ENS) is moving closer to a major architectural evolution, with its decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) now considering a formal proposal to activate a heavily upgraded naming protocol directly on the Ethereum mainnet. The initiative, if approved by token holders, marks a critical milestone for one of the Web3 ecosystem’s most widely adopted decentralized identity protocols, paving the way for enhanced flexibility, advanced domain management, and a complete handover of administrative control to the community.
Nick Johnson, the founder and lead developer of ENS, formally submitted an executable draft proposal to the ENS governance forum to activate ENSv2, representing the long-anticipated next generation of the protocol. The introduction of ENSv2 is designed to modernize the underlying mechanics of decentralized naming, offering a redesigned registry architecture that accommodates more dynamic domain management capabilities and granular permission structures.
Under the terms of the newly submitted proposal, the activation process will introduce temporary operational adjustments for users interacting with the protocol. Specifically, if the DAO votes to approve the upgrade, it will immediately freeze new .eth domain registrations on the original ENS registrar contract. However, this freeze will not disrupt the day-to-day experience of current domain holders, who will retain the unrestricted ability to renew their existing names without being forced to undergo an immediate migration process.
The architectural overhaul is intended to streamline how names are managed, secured, and transferred within the ecosystem. By introducing a redesigned registry framework, ENS Labs has engineered the protocol to support more versatile use cases and better permission controls for developers and domain owners alike. Furthermore, as part of the broader decentralization roadmap accompanying ENSv2, ENS Labs has outlined intentions to transfer its remaining administrative control over the newly upgraded smart contracts directly to the ENS DAO, further cementing the project’s commitment to community-led governance.
While existing domain holders will not be required to migrate their assets, the transition requires careful coordination regarding newly minted names. According to the proposal, new .eth registrations will shift over to the newly upgraded system once all existing domain records have been fully synchronized. Johnson has explicitly cautioned the community that during this synchronization and transition window, new registrations will experience a brief period of downtime, becoming temporarily unavailable on either the legacy or the upgraded version for a duration lasting several hours.
To protect the interests of current community members and prevent preemptive domain squatting during the transition, ENS Labs has proactively reserved existing .eth names for their rightful current owners on the upgraded system. This precautionary measure ensures that users can comfortably transition their assets at their own convenience and when they feel fully ready, without facing the anxiety of losing their established digital identities.
The activation proposal is currently positioned at the draft stage within the governance lifecycle, meaning it must successfully navigate several procedural hurdles before it can be deployed on the mainnet. Most notably, the draft must gather sufficient community consensus to advance to an official onchain DAO vote. Only after clearing this preliminary phase will it be subjected to the rigorous governance rules established by the ENS community.
In accordance with the established governance framework of the ENS DAO, executable proposals of this magnitude are bound by strict participation and majority thresholds. Specifically, the vote requires a minimum voter participation rate of 1% of the total circulating supply, which equates to 1 million ENS votes. Additionally, the proposal must secure a majority approval margin over the course of a standard seven-day voting window.
Should the community vote in favor of the upgrade, the implementation process will still be subject to a mandatory minimum two-day timelock before the smart contracts can be formally executed on the Ethereum mainnet. As of the submission of the draft proposal, a definitive start date for the onchain vote has not yet been officially announced by the protocol’s governance coordinators.
