Bitmine Immersion Technologies Has Finished Accumulating Ether, Setting a Strict 5% Supply Cap, Says Chairman Tom Lee

Bitmine Immersion Technologies has officially drawn a line in the sand regarding its cryptocurrency treasury strategy, announcing that it will cap its holdings at exactly 5% of the entire circulating supply of Ether. The definitive stance was laid out by company Chairman Tom Lee during a high-profile keynote address at the Token2049 conference in Singapore on Wednesday, bringing months of speculation about the firm’s ultimate accumulation goals to a definitive close.

Speaking to a packed audience of industry leaders, developers, and investors, Lee revealed that Bitmine is already sitting on the precipice of that threshold. The company has aggressively accumulated roughly 6 million Ether over the course of its treasury-building campaign, which translates to approximately 4.9% of the asset’s total global supply. According to Lee, the firm requires a mere 100,000 additional ETH to hit its self-imposed ceiling, a milestone that is now well within sight.

"That’s a hard cap. We’re not gonna be accumulating past 5%," Lee told the audience during his keynote speech. Emphasizing the finality of the decision, he added, "We’re not gonna own more than 5% of Ethereum."

The announcement marks a notable evolution in the company’s public posture. Just months prior, leadership had left the door open for an expanded strategy. In an interview with Bankless in August, Lee had hinted that Bitmine might revisit its accumulation targets depending on the broader adoption metrics of the Ethereum network, leaving open the theoretical possibility of pushing past the 5% mark as late as 2027. However, Wednesday’s remarks in Singapore sweep away any ambiguity, locking in a firm ceiling that the corporate treasury will not cross.

Bitmine says it is "done stacking" Ether

Reflecting on the timeline of the company’s massive accumulation phase, Lee pointed out that the vast majority of Bitmine’s multi-billion-dollar treasury was acquired during a period of market pessimism. By stepping in while prices were depressed across the broader digital asset sector, the company was able to build an unprecedented position without sparking runaway spot-market frenzies.

Bitmine sets 5% Ether supply ‘hard cap’ as accumulation target nears

"We did all this buying in a bear market," Lee noted. "We protected the downside for ETH because we were buying. But now, we’re done stacking in front of a 25X move."

The decision to halt accumulation at the 5% threshold is deeply intertwined with Bitmine’s overarching capital strategy and corporate financial planning. By choosing to step away from the open market as a continuous buyer, the firm eliminates the ongoing necessity to raise fresh capital solely for the purpose of purchasing more coins. Lee argued that this self-imposed restraint places the company in an advantageous position relative to its own stock valuation and investor expectations.

"So if we have a 5% hard cap, that means we’re gonna outperform ETH on the way up, right?" Lee explained to the Token2049 audience. "Cause you don’t have to worry about us trying to raise capital. We’re done."

Bitmine’s journey to amass its colossal treasury has required sophisticated navigation of traditional and alternative capital markets. To fund its aggressive acquisition schedule, the company turned to innovative financial instruments. In June, Bitmine successfully launched a $300 million perpetual preferred stock offering, following in the footsteps of pioneering corporate treasury strategies seen elsewhere in the tech and finance sectors. Furthermore, the firm has actively managed its capital structure on the other side of the ledger, having repurchased 16.1 million common shares under a massive $4 billion buyback program by early August.

Even with spot-market accumulation coming to a permanent halt, the mechanics of the Ethereum network mean that Bitmine’s total holdings could still experience upward drift through passive mechanisms like staking. The company has previously projected substantial financial returns from its treasury assets, including estimates pointing toward $334 million in annual staking revenue generated from its $15.8 billion crypto balance sheet.

To prevent these staking rewards from inadvertently pushing the firm’s share of the total supply above its strict 5% limit, Lee has previously outlined a proactive management approach. The company is prepared to systematically sell off portions of the ETH earned natively through network validation and staking activities, ensuring that its total proportion of the circulating supply remains strictly capped at the promised threshold.
