Sam Altman-Backed Meanwhile Raises $37.5 Million as Global Demand for Bitcoin Life Insurance Surges

Meanwhile, pioneering the space as the first life insurer licensed to operate entirely in Bitcoin, has successfully raised $37.5 million in a new funding round from its existing investors, the company announced. The latest financial infusion highlights a growing institutional and venture capital belief in the intersection of digital assets and traditional estate planning, particularly as high-net-worth individuals seek regulated vehicles to manage their wealth.

Bain Capital Crypto led the funding round, with significant participation from a roster of prominent venture capital firms and institutional investors, including Haun Ventures, Framework Ventures, Pantera Capital, Apollo, Northwestern Mutual Future Ventures, and Morgan Creek Digital. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, a notable early backer of the venture, also participated in the round. With this latest injection of capital, Meanwhile’s total funding raised to date has surpassed $180 million, positioning the firm to aggressively scale its operations in response to shifting global financial dynamics.

The company stated that the fresh capital injection directly follows a sharp surge in demand for its Bitcoin-denominated life insurance policies outside the United States. International markets—particularly regions across Asia, Europe, and the Middle East—have emerged as hotbeds for the product, driven largely by broader macroeconomic instability, regulatory shifts, and a rapidly expanding population of wealthy digital asset holders looking to secure their generational wealth.

Zac Townsend, Meanwhile’s co-founder and chief executive officer, emphasized the unique market gap the company is filling in a statement accompanying the funding announcement. Wealthy families around the world already hold substantial amounts of Bitcoin, Townsend noted, but what they have historically lacked is a fully regulated, compliant mechanism to pass those digital assets on to their heirs.

According to Townsend, the company’s expansion is being pulled forward by the advisory ecosystem itself. Brokers approached Meanwhile because their high-net-worth clients kept asking for compliant solutions, and this new funding round provides the necessary resources to keep pace with that surging demand.

Earlier in the year, Meanwhile rolled out BTC Life 1-Pay, a single-premium whole life insurance policy specifically tailored for high-net-worth clients residing outside the United States. This launch marked the company’s second major product line, following its initial offering, BTC 10-Pay, which was designed primarily to cater to US taxpayers navigating domestic tax and estate laws.

Under the terms of the BTC Life 1-Pay product, a client pays a single, upfront premium entirely in Bitcoin and, in exchange, receives a guaranteed death benefit denominated in Bitcoin for life. The underlying value of the policy grows organically in Bitcoin. Furthermore, after the first year of the policy, the owner gains the financial flexibility to borrow up to 90% of the policy’s value, operating with no rigid repayment schedule and free from the threat of margin calls, which are common in traditional crypto-lending markets.

These policies offer a high degree of structuring flexibility, as they can be owned directly by individuals, as well as by trusts or corporate entities. According to the company, this multi-tiered ownership structure makes them exceptionally well-suited for complex international succession and estate planning strategies.

Since the launch of these international-facing products, Meanwhile has successfully signed agreements with 15 prominent brokers serving affluent families across key global financial hubs, including Singapore, Hong Kong, the United Arab Emirates, and Switzerland. Among the company’s strategic distribution partners are Lioner, a comprehensive insurance, trust, and family office group with established offices in Hong Kong, Singapore, and Zurich, as well as the Apeiron Group, a specialized marketplace for high-net-worth life insurance.

Justin Man, CEO of Apeiron Group, highlighted the shifting mindset among wealthy clientele regarding digital wealth. The market is reaching a critical turning point, Man observed, where affluent clients are no longer just asking how to safely hold Bitcoin and other digital assets, but are increasingly focused on how to plan around them over the long term and ultimately transfer that accumulated wealth smoothly to the next generation.

The commercial momentum is also translating directly into financial performance. Meanwhile reported that its net long-term underwriting income has already surpassed the total figures recorded for the entirety of last year and is currently on an aggressive trajectory to more than double throughout the course of the year. While the company opted not to disclose specific financial figures publicly, the growth underscores the viability of its underwriting model.

Stefan Cohen, a partner at Bain Capital Crypto, praised the company’s structural approach and its rapid scaling. Meanwhile owns every layer of a regulated life insurer while building and operating with the agility of an artificial intelligence-enabled startup, Cohen remarked. The robust growth observed over the past year thoroughly proves the strength of the business model, prompting the firm’s backers to reinvest.

The operational backbone of the enterprise is anchored by its licensed entity, Meanwhile Insurance Bitcoin (Bermuda) Limited. The company holds the distinction of being awarded the very first Class IILT license granted by the Bermuda Monetary Authority. This regulatory milestone was achieved in July 2024 following a rigorous two-year incubation period within the regulator’s specialized sandbox environment.

True to its foundational premise, the insurer’s entire balance sheet, corporate reserves, and officially audited financial statements are fully denominated in Bitcoin rather than fiat currency. To ensure the highest standards of safety and regulatory compliance for its policyholders, all customer Bitcoin assets are held securely with regulated, institutional-grade custodians.
