Sam Altman-Backed Bitcoin Life Insurer Meanwhile Raises $37.5M Amid Global Wealth Surge

Meanwhile, pioneering the space as the first life insurer licensed to operate entirely in Bitcoin, has successfully closed a $37.5 million new funding round from its existing investors. The fresh capital infusion highlights a growing institutional appetite for digital asset integration into traditional estate planning tools, as high-net-worth individuals seek secure, regulated avenues to manage and preserve generational wealth.

Bain Capital Crypto spearheaded the financing round, with robust participation from a roster of prominent venture capital firms and strategic investors, including Haun Ventures, Framework Ventures, Pantera Capital, Apollo, Northwestern Mutual Future Ventures, and Morgan Creek Digital. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, a notable early backer of the firm, also participated in the round. With this latest injection of capital, Meanwhile’s total funding raised to date has surpassed the $180 million threshold, cementing its position as a major player at the intersection of cryptocurrency and traditional finance.

According to the company, the new funding directly follows a sharp surge in international demand for its Bitcoin-denominated life insurance policies. While the initial wave of digital asset adoption was heavily concentrated in domestic markets, Meanwhile has experienced rapid expansion outside the United States, with wealthy families across Asia, Europe, and the Middle East increasingly turning to Bitcoin life insurance as a hedge against broader macroeconomic instability and currency fluctuations.

"Wealthy families around the world already hold Bitcoin. What they haven’t had is a regulated way to pass it on," said Zac Townsend, co-founder and CEO of Meanwhile, in a statement addressing the market dynamics driving the company’s growth. "Brokers came to us because their clients kept asking. This round lets us keep up with them."

The demand has been met with targeted product development. In early 2026, Meanwhile rolled out BTC Life 1-Pay, a single-premium whole life policy specifically tailored for high-net-worth clients located outside the United States. This product represents the company’s second major offering, following the introduction of its BTC 10-Pay policy, which was originally designed to accommodate the specific needs of US taxpayers navigating domestic regulatory frameworks.

Under the mechanics of the BTC Life 1-Pay policy, a client pays a single, upfront premium denominated in Bitcoin and receives a guaranteed death benefit, also paid in Bitcoin, for the duration of their life. The underlying value of the policy grows in tandem with Bitcoin, and crucially, after the completion of the first year, the policy owner is permitted to borrow up to 90% of the policy’s value. This liquidity feature is structured without a traditional repayment schedule and operates free from the threat of margin calls, offering a flexible financial tool for sophisticated asset holders.

Furthermore, these policies are designed to accommodate flexible ownership structures. They can be held directly by individuals, or integrated into complex legal frameworks such as trusts and corporate entities. Company executives emphasize that this versatility makes the policies exceptionally well-suited for comprehensive succession and estate planning, a domain where digital assets have historically presented significant logistical and legal hurdles.

Since the rollout of its international offerings, Meanwhile has rapidly expanded its distribution network, successfully signing 15 major brokerages that serve affluent clientele across key global financial hubs, including Singapore, Hong Kong, the United Arab Emirates, and Switzerland. Among its prominent distribution partners are Lioner—an established insurance, trust, and family office group operating across Hong Kong, Singapore, and Zurich—and Apeiron Group, a specialized marketplace for high-net-worth life insurance products.

"We’re reaching a turning point where more high-net-worth clients are asking not just how to hold Bitcoin and digital assets, but how to plan around them and ultimately transfer that wealth to the next generation," noted Justin Man, CEO of Apeiron Group, reflecting on the shifting priorities of affluent investors managing multi-asset portfolios.

The commercial traction is already translating into measurable financial milestones for the insurer. Meanwhile reported that its net long-term underwriting income has already surpassed the total figures recorded for the entirety of last year and remains firmly on an upward trajectory to more than double throughout 2026, though the privately held firm opted not to disclose specific monetary figures.

Industry backers have pointed to the company’s unique corporate architecture as a key driver of its ongoing success. By combining the rigid regulatory compliance required of an insurance provider with the operational agility of a modern technology enterprise, Meanwhile has managed to carve out an entirely new asset class category.

"Meanwhile owns every layer of a regulated life insurer and builds it like an AI-enabled startup," observed Stefan Cohen, a partner at Bain Capital Crypto. "The growth this year proves the model, and we’re glad to back them again."

The operational backbone of the enterprise is anchored by its primary operating entity, Meanwhile Insurance Bitcoin (Bermuda) Limited. The company holds a prestigious Class IILT license granted by the Bermuda Monetary Authority, a regulatory milestone achieved in July 2024 following a rigorous two-year development period within the regulator’s specialized sandbox environment.

Operating under this regulatory framework, the insurer maintains a balance sheet, corporate reserves, and audited financial statements that are entirely denominated in Bitcoin. To ensure the highest standards of security and institutional trust, all policyholder Bitcoin assets are held securely with regulated institutional custodians rather than internal hot wallets.
