Payward, the parent company of major cryptocurrency exchange Kraken, has announced comprehensive plans to officially launch its operations within the United Arab Emirates. The strategic move comes in the wake of securing full market approval from Dubai’s Virtual Asset Regulatory Authority, a milestone that enables the global digital asset heavyweight to firmly establish its footprint in one of the world’s most dynamic and forward-thinking financial hubs.
Following the regulatory green light, Payward confirmed that it is now officially authorized to operate as a fully regulated virtual asset service provider. This designation allows the company to cater seamlessly to a broad spectrum of clients in the region, encompassing retail traders, professional investors, and large-scale institutional entities alike. The official market approval represents the culmination of a rigorous regulatory journey that included the acquisition of a preliminary approval granted back in May. That initial clearance provided the exchange with the necessary operational window to meticulously finalize its technological infrastructure, complete its internal compliance frameworks, and prepare its operational set-up ahead of onboarding its first wave of local clients.
At the time of the official launch, Kraken clients residing in the UAE will gain immediate access to a comprehensive suite of trading options. Users will be able to engage in both spot and margin trading utilizing dirham-denominated pairs, while also enjoying the convenience of funding and withdrawing directly in United Arab Emirates dirhams. Beyond standard trading pairs, the platform will offer local users access to innovative financial tools and services, including on-chain staking capabilities, xStocks tokenized equities, and Krak, the company’s dedicated solution for streamlined crypto transfers. Meanwhile, institutional clients operating in the region will be greeted with specialized offerings designed to meet their sophisticated needs, including Over-The-Counter spot trading services and Kraken Prime, the platform’s dedicated institutional brokerage arm. Furthermore, the company anticipates introducing crypto derivatives and novel yield-generating products later in 2026 and extending into 2027, pending the receipt of subsequent regulatory approvals from the relevant authorities.
This major expansion into the Middle East reinforces Payward’s extensive global compliance strategy. The parent company currently holds more than 100 regulatory licenses and registrations worldwide, with operations and legal frameworks spanning across Europe, the Americas, the Asia-Pacific region, and the Middle East. By securing a foothold in Dubai with full regulatory backing, Kraken continues to solidify its position as a globally compliant bridge between traditional financial systems and the digital asset economy.
The announcement of the UAE launch arrives alongside a wave of significant corporate developments and high-profile strategic partnerships for the firm. In September, financial media reports indicated that Nasdaq Inc. was making a substantial $100 million strategic investment in Payward. That reported transaction valued the cryptocurrency exchange parent company at an impressive $21 billion. According to those reports, the partnership goes beyond mere financial investment, establishing a framework through which Kraken will facilitate the distribution of Nasdaq’s tokenized stocks directly on its own trading platform.
In addition to its alignment with traditional exchange infrastructure, Payward and SoFi Technologies recently revealed a strategic collaboration designed to bridge retail banking and digital assets. Under the terms of that agreement, SoFi customer cryptocurrency orders will be intelligently routed through Kraken Prime—the institutional prime brokerage arm that Kraken initially launched in 2025. Furthermore, the partnership includes plans to list SoFi’s proprietary stablecoin directly on the Kraken exchange, further deepening the ties between digital asset platforms and consumer-facing financial technology firms.
These synergistic deals highlight a broader, industry-wide trend among leading cryptocurrency exchanges. Kraken and its peers are increasingly pushing past the boundaries of native crypto trading to integrate deeply into the traditional finance landscape. By enabling users to seamlessly trade tokenized stocks, bonds, and a wide array of alternative financial instruments alongside digital currencies, the company is actively executing a long-term vision. Through continuous platform development and regulatory engagement, Kraken has increasingly marketed its application not merely as a specialized crypto hub, but as a comprehensive, primary financial account for everything.
