Sam Altman-Backed Meanwhile Secures $37.5 Million as International Wealth Turns to Bitcoin Life Insurance

Meanwhile, a pioneering life insurer licensed to operate entirely in Bitcoin, has announced that it has successfully secured $37.5 million in new funding from its existing investors. The Bermuda-based company, whose high-profile backers include OpenAI Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman, has now raised a cumulative total of more than $180 million since its inception.

Bain Capital Crypto spearheaded the latest funding round. The financing also saw significant participation from a prominent roster of venture capital firms and institutional investors, including Haun Ventures, Framework Ventures, Pantera Capital, Apollo, Northwestern Mutual Future Ventures, and Morgan Creek Digital, according to an official statement released by the company.

This fresh injection of capital follows a surge in international demand for Meanwhile’s specialized Bitcoin-denominated life insurance policies. The company noted that interest has particularly accelerated across regions in Asia, Europe, and the Middle East, driven largely by broader macroeconomic instability and ongoing economic uncertainties worldwide.

Zac Townsend, Meanwhile’s co-founder and chief executive officer, emphasized the unique market gap the company is filling for global HNWIs and institutional participants. Wealthy families around the globe already hold substantial amounts of Bitcoin as part of their long-term portfolios, Townsend explained in the announcement. What they historically have lacked, however, is a fully compliant, regulated mechanism to preserve, manage, and pass that digital wealth down to subsequent generations.

Townsend added that traditional wealth advisors and brokers actively approached the company because their private clients kept asking for compliant legacy solutions. Consequently, this latest funding round will provide the operational capacity and capital reserves necessary to keep pace with soaring client demand.

Passing Bitcoin to the Next Generation

In early 2026, Meanwhile expanded its product ecosystem by launching BTC Life 1-Pay, a single-premium whole life insurance policy specifically engineered to cater to high-net-worth clients residing outside of the United States. This product represents the firm’s second major commercial line following the earlier introduction of BTC 10-Pay, a structured policy tailored specifically for United States taxpayers.

Under the current structural framework, Meanwhile’s policies can be owned directly by individuals, designated family trusts, or corporate entities. This institutional flexibility makes the offerings an optimal fit for comprehensive succession planning, estate management, and generational wealth transfer, according to the insurer.

The company’s commercial traction is reflected in its underwriting performance. Meanwhile reported that its net long-term underwriting income has already surpassed the total figures recorded for the entirety of the previous year. Furthermore, the firm’s financial trajectory is currently on track to more than double its underwriting income over the course of 2026, though the company elected to withhold precise financial figures in its public announcements.

The broader institutional acceptance and risk-management infrastructure surrounding digital assets continue to mature across the global financial sector. In related developments within the insurance industry, Cointelegraph reported in June that WTW, a prominent global insurance broker and risk advisory corporation, acquired Redefind, a specialized crypto insurance platform.

Through this acquisition, WTW launched an advanced digital asset protection service tailored to cover complex financial expenses associated with forensic investigations, asset tracing, and legal recovery efforts following instances of theft, hacking, or accidental loss. Redefind’s underlying platform enables individual investors and large institutions to purchase dedicated insurance coverage for digital assets distributed across various custody arrangements. The platform utilizes sophisticated cryptographic proofs of ownership to verify and authenticate insured assets securely.
